Start with the door, not the SIP account
A door station may place a SIP audio or video call, but it also controls a physical opening. Record the lock type, power supply, relay mode, door-position sensor, request-to-exit input, fire-alarm or emergency-release dependency and behavior during network and power loss. A registered extension is not evidence that the opening is code-compliant or safe.
Keep fail-secure and fail-safe decisions with the qualified access-control and life-safety design. Do not infer either behavior from a product's SIP, PoE, IP or impact-resistance labels.
Separate identity methods from authorization
PINs, cards, NFC, Bluetooth, QR codes, mobile apps and remote SIP unlock can all reach different policy engines. Inventory who can issue, revoke and audit each credential type; set expiry for visitors; remove lost devices and cards; and test that a denied identity cannot fall through to another unintended path.
A reader's supported card formats or a large user capacity does not prove anti-cloning strength, enrollment quality or a suitable privacy policy. Treat remote unlock as a privileged action and require an evidence trail appropriate to the site.
Design voice, video and door control independently
Verify SIP signaling, negotiated audio and video, DTMF or vendor-specific unlock signaling and the PBX route separately. Then verify the relay, door sensor and request-to-exit circuit with the real door hardware. A video stream may use SIP, RTSP, ONVIF or a cloud application on a different path from the intercom call.
Define where recordings, snapshots, door logs and mobile alerts are stored, who can view them and how long they are retained. Place the station on a controlled network and expose no administrative interface merely to make remote calling convenient.
Pilot the exact installation
Confirm field of view at the installed height, microphone and speaker intelligibility, night or backlit images, weather sealing, drainage, grounding, tamper response and usable entry for intended occupants. Test power interruption, PBX outage, internet loss, mobile-app unavailability and credential revocation.
Manufacturer IP and IK ratings describe specific standardized protection claims; they do not establish installation workmanship, cybersecurity, accessibility, local door-code compliance or life-safety approval. Record the model, firmware, mounting, power source, lock wiring, management platform and acceptance result together.
Add the indoor facility-control owner to the door path
The IP facility control station category separates operator display, SIP call, camera view, alarm input, remote-unlock request, relay owner and door-state feedback. The Grandstream GSC3570 is one current example; its direct-peer and SIP-server pairing paths must not be treated as the same design.
Choose fixed and modular 2N stations by exact physical role
The 2N device hub separates the compact one-button IP One from the modular IP Verso 2.0. Freeze the exact main unit, access modules, relay owner, power and mounting before comparing SIP or camera features; a family name does not establish the installed door-control architecture.
Use the GDS3712 as a model-specific video-intercom example
The Grandstream GDS3712 guide keeps camera, SIP media, unlock request, relay, input and door movement independently observable. Use its focused diagnostic when a call works but video or opening does not.
