Plivo Zentrunk: inbound URI, fallback, logs and call evidence

Keep number assignment, primary and fallback URI, reachability, SIP response, hangup evidence, PBX handling, capacity and media separately observable.

Reviewed 2026-10-18Current first-party Plivo Zentrunk quickstart, technical-specification, account-limit, hangup-code and debug-log documentation reviewed October 18, 2026. Number assignment, inbound trunk, primary and fallback URI, URI authentication, DNS result, provider attempt, SIP response, hangup source and cause, PBX handling, answer and each media direction remain separate evidence. Plivo documents fallback when the primary URI is unresponsive, not as a universal retry after every SIP final response. No Plivo account, trunk, number, URI, credential, PBX, DNS answer, firewall, packet, media stream or live call was inspected or testedIntermediateDocumentation based · not lab tested

Separate inbound and outbound trunk objects

Plivo documents separate inbound trunks for calls delivered to customer infrastructure and outbound trunks for customer-originated calls. Only an inbound trunk is linked to Plivo phone numbers and a customer primary or fallback URI. Outbound calling instead uses a termination domain plus an IP access-control list, credentials or both.

Zentrunk does not support SIP REGISTER. A missing registration indicator is therefore not evidence that the trunk is down. Preserve direction, trunk ID, number assignment, URI and outbound authentication as different objects.

Documented service facts

Reviewed 2026-10-18. Compare SIP trunk services →

Outbound authentication

Documented

Outbound trunks accept an IP access-control list, username/password credentials, or both. These controls authenticate INVITEs sent by customer infrastructure; they do not create a registrar binding.

SIP registration

Documented

Zentrunk does not support SIP REGISTER. Configure outbound authentication and inbound destination URIs instead of waiting for a registration state.

Inbound delivery

Documented

Link Plivo numbers to a separate enabled inbound trunk and configure a primary customer FQDN or IP address plus optional URI authentication. Preserve the number link, trunk ID, URI and PBX match as distinct evidence.

Inbound failover

Documented

An inbound trunk can use one primary and one fallback URI. Plivo documents forwarding to fallback when the primary is unresponsive; the reviewed public pages do not promise advancement after every final SIP rejection.

Number and regional availability

Conflicting documentation

Current public surfaces disagree: the quickstart and product page describe 190-plus outbound countries and numbers in 70-plus countries, while the coverage page presents 225 outbound countries and 12 inbound countries. Verify the exact country, direction, number type, inventory and eligibility live.

Audio codecs

Documented

The current technical specification lists PCMU and PCMA with RFC 2833 DTMF. Negotiation, packetization, transcoding and digit acceptance on a selected route still require testing.

T.38 fax

Documented

The current Zentrunk technical specification explicitly says T.38 fax is not supported. Do not infer fax support from G.711 audio availability or another Plivo product.

Signaling and media encryption

Documented

Secure Trunking documents TLS 1.2 or 1.3 for signaling and SRTP for media on the customer-to-Zentrunk leg; the feature is disabled by default on a new outbound trunk.

Call-start and active-call capacity

Documented

Outbound CPS and active-call concurrency are separate account-wide pools shared with Voice API traffic; each outbound trunk also draws CPS from that pool. Limits vary by data region, plan and account history. Calls above a Zentrunk limit are rejected rather than queued, with hangup cause 5180 for CPS or 5190 for concurrency.

Emergency calling

Not verified

Emergency calling availability, registered-location workflow, calling identity, callback routing and approved testing were not verified for this trunk service and location.

Pricing model

Documented

The service is presented as pay-as-you-go per-minute trunking without channel or port fees; destination rates, number rental, taxes, support and account terms require a current quote or rate review.

Administration and support

Not verified

Debug logs expose direction, trunk ID and domain, secure-trunk state, transport, hangup source and cause, final SIP response, negotiated codec and a downloadable SIP PCAP. Retention, contracted support response and recovery behavior remain unverified.

SMS and MMS

Not verified

Number-specific messaging eligibility, sender registration, pricing and integration with a Zentrunk voice deployment were not verified in this review.

Prove the number, trunk and URI chain

For inbound calling, begin with the dialed Plivo number and verify that it is linked to the intended enabled inbound trunk. Record that trunk ID, the primary URI, the optional fallback URI, each FQDN or IP address, URI authentication setting and the PBX route expected to accept the resulting INVITE.

A number in the account is not proof of assignment to this trunk. A saved URI is not proof that DNS resolved, the network accepted the packet, credentials matched or a PBX route answered.

Read fallback as an unresponsive-primary rule

The current quickstart says calls go to the primary URI first and are forwarded to the fallback URI if the primary is unresponsive. It does not publish a universal response-code matrix promising that every 4xx, 5xx or 6xx from the primary advances to fallback. Preserve no response, transport failure and each final SIP response as different outcomes.

For an authorized noncritical number, test a normal call, a deliberately unreachable primary, recovery and return to primary. Test a reachable primary that rejects the call separately. Do not call one successful fallback attempt a service-level or active-call continuity result.

Correlate provider logs with PBX and network evidence

Plivo debug logs expose call direction, timestamps, trunk ID and domain, secure-trunk status, transport, hangup source and cause, final SIP response, negotiated codec and a downloadable SIP PCAP. The hangup reference distinguishes customer, carrier and Zentrunk sources and includes URI, timeout, routing, authorization, capacity and media causes.

Use one call UUID and SIP Call-ID to align those records with PBX logging and, when authorized, a customer-side capture. Provider signaling PCAP is not proof of packets at the PBX interface, and a negotiated codec does not prove decoded two-way audio.

Keep capacity, protection, media and account facts independent

Plivo documents account-wide CPS and concurrency pools shared by SIP Trunking and Voice API, with additional outbound-trunk CPS. Calls above Zentrunk limits are rejected rather than queued, using hangup cause 5180 for CPS or 5190 for concurrency. Those limits are different from inbound URI reachability or PBX capacity.

The current specification lists PCMU and PCMA, RFC 2833 DTMF, TLS signaling and SRTP media. Secure Trunking state, transport, SDP, selected codec, RTP endpoints and both decoded audio directions still need separate evidence. Confirm current limits, data region, number inventory, port status, emergency workflow, regulatory eligibility, retention, support entitlement and rates through the authorized account and order. No account, number, trunk, URI, failover event, PBX, packet, protected session, codec, DTMF event, media stream, emergency workflow, price, availability or compatibility was tested for this guide.
