Andrews & Arnold SIP Trunks: registration, targets and DDI evidence

Separate A&A outbound registration, inbound SIP-to-server targets, DDI and base-number inheritance, multiple-target routing, service controls and emergency dependencies.

Identify the number, block and trunk direction

A&A describes every VoIP number as usable for SIP trunking, but the outbound and inbound directions can use different mechanisms. Record the customer account, full international-format number, any DDI block and base-number inheritance, the authorized PBX or SBC, service address, Control Page state and current order.

For outbound service, the PBX can register with the number and per-number SIP password. For inbound service, A&A can send calls to a configured SIP server with credentials that server expects. A registration, a SIP-to-server target and a forwarded PSTN number are different delivery contracts.

Documented service facts

SIP authentication

Documented

A&A documents number-based SIP accounts using the full international-format number, a per-number SIP password and voiceless.aa.net.uk. For provider delivery to a customer server, the customer separately supplies the credentials that server expects. Keep outbound registration authentication and inbound server authentication as different directions and do not expose either secret.

SIP registration

Documented

A PBX can register like a SIP phone, while an inbound “SIP to your Server” target does not require registration. If both are configured, A&A says it may send INVITEs to the registered device and the configured server. Record DNS and SRV resolution, all contacts, expiry and the chosen inbound target instead of assuming one universal trunk mode.

Inbound delivery and DDI routing

Documented

Control Pages can route a number to a registration, another number or a customer SIP server. Number blocks can inherit the base number target while individual numbers retain separate management and billing. Preserve the called DDI, base or group relationship, selected target, Request-URI and PBX match for each call.

Inbound resilience and multiple targets

Documented

A&A documents multiple targets, per-target delay and up to ten Also Ring numbers. It also warns that remote voicemail can answer an external leg unexpectedly. These are call-routing tools, not proof of active-call survival, ordered resilience, answer confirmation, restoration time or alternate capacity. Test one approved failure and recovery path.

Number and regional availability

Documented

A&A publishes UK geographic, 03 and other number categories and supports number blocks and porting, but the actual inventory, port eligibility, activation date and regulatory use depend on the requested number and order. Retain the allocation or completed port result for the exact block.

Audio codecs and DTMF

Documented

The technical page documents the provider-side FireBrick as an RTP endpoint using G.711 A-law with 20 ms audio and accepting SIP INFO or RFC2833 DTMF. Treat that as a documented platform boundary, not proof of the selected account, payload mapping, negotiated codec, decoded audio or digit result. Preserve SDP and both RTP directions.

Fax and T.38

Not verified

The reviewed SIP-trunk, technical and product pages do not establish T.38 entitlement, audio-fax policy, supported gateways or document limits for the selected service. Qualify fax separately with signaling, media-mode, page-result and error evidence.

Service security controls

Documented

A&A documents strong per-number SIP passwords, optional source-IP restrictions, call-price limits, registration alerts and Control Page 2FA. These controls do not establish TLS, certificate validation or SRTP for a selected call. Authentication, authorization, fraud limits, signaling confidentiality and media confidentiality remain separate findings.

Concurrent calls and call-start rate

Documented

A&A says it does not impose a channel count on its VoIP accounts or incoming numbers. That statement does not establish PBX, access-circuit, media, credit, fraud-control or calls-per-second capacity for a deployment. Obtain any operational limits and run only an approved bounded load test.

Emergency calling

Documented

A&A warns that power, Internet, customer equipment and provider faults can prevent VoIP emergency calling and recommends a tested alternative path. Confirm registered location and callback-number policy for every deployment, document power and connectivity dependencies, and use only a provider-approved emergency validation process.

Pricing and contract

Documented

A&A publishes number setup, monthly number rental and destination-based call pricing, and states a one-month minimum term for the reviewed retail service. Prices are dated public catalogue evidence, not a complete quote: number grade, porting, special ranges, taxes, calls and account-specific terms still require a current order.

Administration and support

Documented

Control Pages manage SIP passwords, inbound targets, base and group relationships, presentation numbers, rate limits and security alerts. A&A also documents DNS SRV-based server changes. Retain submitted settings, effective provider state, DNS answers and loaded PBX state as separate evidence.

SMS and MMS

Not verified

A&A offers adjacent SMS features, but the reviewed trunk sources do not establish SMS or MMS eligibility, sender handling, API behavior, throughput, retention or price for the selected trunk number. Qualify messaging as its own product and compliance path.

Resolve registration, DNS and direct server delivery

Capture the registrar name, DNS A, AAAA and SRV answers, transport, authentication identity, Contact, requested and granted expiry and every provider-visible registration. A&A documents multiple active servers and may change which servers DNS selects, so a PBX pinned to one cached address can diverge from the service name.

Then inspect the inbound target independently. A configured SIP-to-server hostname, port or IP does not require the PBX to register. If registration and direct delivery are both present, A&A says both can receive INVITEs; do not label a second call branch a duplicate until the intended target model is known.

Trace DDI, base-number inheritance and identity

For a number block, record the called DDI, its base or group setting, the effective inbound target and the exact Request-URI reaching the PBX. Individual numbers can inherit the base target while retaining separate management and billing, so the visible DDI and the authenticating base number may not be the same object.

For outbound calls, preserve the authentication number, asserted CLI, presentation-number setting, provider acceptance and destination-visible identity. Ownership of a DDI, use as a base number and authorization to present a CLI remain separate evidence.

Bound multiple targets, answer and failover

A number can have registered devices, a SIP server target and Also Ring destinations with optional delays. Inventory every active branch and its owner before changing the PBX. Remote voicemail can answer an external branch, so provider acceptance, alerting, answer, human confirmation, bridge and media must be recorded separately.

Multiple targets can improve new-call reachability, but they do not prove active-call survival, alternate capacity, answer confirmation, detection time or restoration. Exercise normal delivery, one approved failure, a nonmatching control number, recovery and return to primary.

Keep media, security and scale claims scoped

The published platform description covers G.711 A-law audio and SIP INFO or RFC2833 DTMF at the provider media endpoint. Preserve the actual SDP, payload mapping, RTP endpoints, both audio directions and decoded digits. Fax remains unverified until its own T.38 or audio-fax acceptance path is documented.

Use strong SIP passwords, source-IP restrictions, registration alerts, price limits and Control Page 2FA where appropriate, but do not turn those fraud and access controls into TLS or SRTP claims. An unlimited published channel count also does not prove PBX, bandwidth, credit or call-start capacity.

Accept commercial, support and emergency boundaries

Retain a dated order for number setup, rental, porting, destination rates, taxes, term and support. The public price page is a catalogue snapshot and not proof of an available number, completed port or selected account entitlement.

Document location and callback-number requirements, local power and Internet dependencies, customer equipment, provider fault exposure and an accessible alternative route. Coordinate emergency validation with the provider and relevant authorities; do not place an uncoordinated emergency call. No customer trunk or live call was tested for this guide.

Diagnose an old device ringing beside the PBX

When an A&A number alerts a retired device and the PBX, use the focused target-graph diagnostic. It separates provider registrations, direct SIP-to-server delivery, inherited DDI targets, Also Ring branches, answer and cancellation.
