Baresip account loads but registration or audio fails

Trace the selected configuration directory, compiled and loaded modules, account User-Agent, registration transaction, SDP, RTP and exact audio devices before changing NAT or codecs.

Reviewed 2026-10-13Current Baresip 4.12.0 release, repository, account, configuration and module documentation reviewed October 13, 2026; the selected package, core, libre library, build options, module path, loaded modules, configuration directory, account line, credential, registrar, PBX, transport, audio devices, codec offer, SDP, RTP, protection mode and call remain deployment specific, and no package, process, file, module, account, registration, packet, device, media stream or call was inspected or testedAdvancedDocumentation based · not lab tested

Freeze the exact artifact, process and selected configuration directory

Record timestamp and timezone, operating system, package or source artifact, Baresip and libre versions, process arguments, selected configuration directory, file ownership and permissions, active account line, destination, registrar, network and the first missing behavior. Preserve diagnostic output with credentials and calling data redacted.

The project generates configuration files in the selected path on first use, while another directory can be selected at launch. A file that exists under a remembered home directory is not evidence that the running process read it. A packaged wrapper can also ship different modules or defaults from a source-tree example.

Prove that each required module was built, found and loaded

Inventory the installed module directory, compiled modules and startup load result. The configuration reference separates normal, temporary and application modules, while the project catalogue lists account loading, codecs, audio drivers, NAT traversal, protected media and user interfaces as distinct modules. Preserve the first load error and its dependency before changing the account.

A capability in the repository is not proof that the selected package compiled or installed it. Likewise, naming an audio driver or codec in configuration cannot load a library that is absent or rejected at startup. Correct the module path, packaging or dependency boundary first, then restart through the supported service path and recapture the loaded set.

Confirm account creation and registration intent

The account module processes the accounts file at startup and creates one User-Agent per account line. Match the exact SIP identity, authentication identity, domain, port, transport, outbound proxy and selected account without exposing its password. Confirm that the expected User-Agent exists before interpreting a registration status.

The account reference separates a positive regint, which initiates periodic REGISTER requests, from regint=0, which creates a local account without registration for peer-to-peer use. An account line that loads successfully can therefore be intentionally unregistered. Do not convert a local account into a registrar account until the intended service design is confirmed.

Follow the registration transaction instead of its label

For an account intended to register, preserve DNS answers, selected transport and address, connection result, REGISTER, challenge, authenticated retry, response code, expiry and later refresh. Keep TLS certificate validation, SIP authentication and registrar authorization separate. A reachable socket does not prove an accepted identity, and a 200 response does not prove inbound routing or a future call.

Correct only the demonstrated boundary: wrong loaded account, name resolution, address family, transport, certificate path, authentication identity, credential, outbound route, registrar policy or refresh timing. Avoid broad firewall changes and do not paste credential-bearing account lines into shared tickets.

Trace audio modules, devices, codec negotiation and RTP separately

Baresip configures the playback and recording sides as a module and device pair; an account can also override audio source, player and offered codec list. Record the global values, account overrides, enumerated device names, operating-system permissions and selected capture and playback endpoints. Prove that the required audio-driver and codec modules loaded.

Then retain both SDP bodies, the selected codec and packetization, negotiated media addresses, NAT or relay method and RTP in both directions. Local level movement, received RTP and audible playback are separate outcomes. Changing STUN, TURN, ICE, codec order and audio devices together erases the earliest useful failure boundary.

Correct one boundary and retest registration, calling and media

Apply one reversible correction to the earliest demonstrated mismatch, preserve rollback and repeat the same account and call. Test process restart, registration refresh, inbound and outbound signaling, early media, answer, DTMF, both media directions, hold and hangup. If protection is required, verify the selected SIP transport, certificate result, SDP keying and protected packets rather than inferring them from a loaded module.

Record the exact package and workstation scope of the result. Do not convert a source-project platform list or successful test on one wrapper into universal compatibility, background availability or support. This workflow is documentation-derived and was not reproduced on a customer or laboratory system.
