SIPStation: registered trunks, FreePBX integration and feature boundaries

Map SIPStation credentials, registration, dual gateways, FreePBX-generated configuration, media, fax, emergency and messaging controls without assuming account behavior.

Reviewed 2026-10-14Current public Sangoma SIPStation troubleshooting, inbound-failover, access-restriction, FreePBX module, PJSIP, PBX-configuration and inbound-route documentation reviewed October 14, 2026; the sources document registration-style and optional peer-to-peer service, primary and secondary SIPStation delivery, configured global or per-DID failover, FreePBX DID routing and capture guidance, but they do not establish the state of any account, credential, registration, number, trunk group, gateway, DNS answer, firewall, NAT mapping, route, destination, failover event, packet, media stream or live call, and none was inspected or testedAdvancedDocumentation based · not lab tested

Separate the account key, SIP credentials and registration state

SIPStation's FreePBX module uses an account key, while the manual documentation identifies service-specific SIP usernames and passwords that are not the store login. The troubleshooting guide states that the PBX must register for inbound calls. Preserve each secret's owner and function, the registered contact, expiry, selected transport and the exact PBX object instead of collapsing them into one credential field.

A reset takes effect immediately according to the provider and requires a new keycode on the PBX; service can fail until that update is applied. Plan credential rotation as a controlled change, protect the values from logs and screenshots, and keep a recovery path that does not expose the old or new secret.

Authentication

Documented

SIPStation supplies service-specific SIP credentials and a SIPStation account key used by its FreePBX module. Those values are distinct from store credentials. Treat the module key, SIP username and SIP password as separate secrets; a credential reset requires the new keycode on the PBX and can interrupt both directions until the configuration is updated.

SIP registration

Documented

Sangoma states that the PBX must register to receive inbound calls. Its FreePBX integration creates primary and secondary connections, while a separate PJSIP procedure converts module-created trunks on applicable versions. Confirm the loaded channel driver and generated objects on the exact FreePBX release; the manual chan_sip article is explicitly limited to version 16 and older.

Inbound delivery

Documented

SIPStation normally attempts its primary gateway and then the secondary gateway; inbound DIDs are delivered as ten digits according to the troubleshooting guide. The FreePBX module can create basic inbound routes, but generated routing still requires review for DID matching, destination ownership and overlap with existing routes.

Inbound failover

Documented

SIPStation documents primary and secondary service gateways plus global or per-DID failover to an alternate ten- or eleven-digit PSTN number. This protects new inbound attempts under documented conditions; it does not establish active-call preservation. Test the intended outage, selected target, caller presentation, delay and restoration before relying on it.

Number and regional availability

Documented

Sangoma describes local-number inventory across more than 5,000 rate centers and documents trial calling in the lower 48 US states and Canada excluding territories. Those statements do not establish current inventory, portability, service activation or paid calling coverage for a specific address or number. Verify the exact order and port before migration.

Audio codecs

Documented

The configuration guide lists G.711 and G.729. It recommends UDP signaling on the configured SIP bind port and UDP 10000-20000 for RTP on standard FreePBX/Asterisk installs, while warning that media can arrive from many changing addresses. Preserve the actual offer, answer, negotiated codec, DTMF behavior and observed RTP endpoints.

T.38 fax

Documented

SIPStation documents inbound and metered outbound T.38 on its two-way trunks, explicitly calls fax best effort and recommends qualifying quality before porting. Do not infer FaxStation behavior from SIPStation: Sangoma describes FaxStation as a separate fax-only product using a different mechanism. Test the exact DID, direction, gateway and document set.

Signaling and media encryption

Not verified

The reviewed configuration guidance documents UDP signaling and RTP and permits signaling filters based on the two gateway FQDNs, whose resolved addresses can change. It says media can originate from many addresses. No first-party TLS or SRTP procedure was verified for this service, so firewall allowlisting must not be described as encryption.

Concurrent calls and call starts

Documented

Sangoma separates DIDs from simultaneous call paths and states that purchased trunks govern concurrent calls; its FAQ also describes concurrency bursting. The module creates two gateway connections regardless of purchased channels. No current public call-start-per-second limit was verified. Obtain both the effective concurrency and burst/CPS policy for the account.

Emergency calling

Documented

SIPStation requires a master E911 DID and supports additional DID-address assignments. The E911 guide describes using the master record when outbound caller ID does not match an E911-enabled DID. Keep every dispatchable address and calling identity current and use only the provider-approved test procedure; a normal outbound call does not validate emergency routing.

Pricing model

Conflicting documentation

SIPStation's public marketing and store surfaces showed different current amounts during this review. Do not treat either as a durable quote. Price the exact account at checkout, including channels, DIDs, outbound T.38, E911, messaging, international use, taxes, top-ups and any support or commitment terms.

Administration and support

Documented

The SIPStation portal manages service, credentials, DIDs, failover, emergency records and related options; the FreePBX module can create trunks and basic routes. Preserve the account key securely, export the generated configuration and record the module, FreePBX and Asterisk versions. Credential changes and module regeneration need an approved rollback plan.

SMS

Documented

Sangoma documents SMS on capable US and Canada SIPStation DIDs, currently through FreePBX or PBXact using UCP or Zulu. Capability is DID-specific. The reviewed page does not establish MMS, an independent public API, throughput, registration, consent or current carrier-program requirements; verify those before selection.

Treat generated FreePBX configuration as versioned state

The SIPStation module can create two trunks and basic inbound and outbound routes. Sangoma also publishes a PJSIP-mode procedure. By contrast, its manual chan_sip article is explicitly for FreePBX 16 and older and points FreePBX 17 users elsewhere. Record the FreePBX, Asterisk and module versions, choose the supported workflow for that release, apply configuration and inspect the running objects.

Before enrollment, export existing trunks, routes and DID patterns. After generation, review ordering, caller identity, emergency routes, codec policy and any overlap with existing routes. Do not edit generated files as a durable fix or assume a historical port or channel-driver default applies to the loaded system.

Test gateway redundancy and PSTN failover separately

SIPStation documents primary and secondary gateway connections and normally attempts inbound delivery through the first and then the second. It separately offers global or per-DID failover to an alternate PSTN number. Those are different controls with different targets and failure boundaries.

For each approved test, record DNS resolution, registration state, attempted gateway, SIP response or timeout, selected failover number, delay, caller presentation and restoration. These mechanisms concern new call attempts; the reviewed material does not establish preservation of an active call when a gateway, PBX or access link fails.

Keep signaling, media, fax and encryption claims distinct

The configuration guide lists G.711 and G.729 and documents UDP signaling plus an RTP port range for standard FreePBX/Asterisk deployments. It warns that gateway addresses can change and that media can come from many addresses. Capture the actual offer, answer, DTMF behavior and RTP endpoints; a successful registration does not prove two-way media.

Sangoma separately documents best-effort T.38 on SIPStation trunks and recommends qualifying fax before porting. That does not make the distinct FaxStation product equivalent. The reviewed material did not establish TLS or SRTP for SIPStation, so a firewall rule or FQDN allowlist must not be presented as transport or media encryption.

Qualify capacity, E911 and SMS as independent services

The trunk FAQ separates DIDs from simultaneous call paths and describes account concurrency, but no current public call-start rate was verified. Obtain the effective concurrent-call and burst/CPS controls and test only within an authorized limit. Two provider gateway connections do not double the purchased capacity.

Emergency configuration uses a master E911 DID plus optional DID-specific addresses, and unmatched outbound caller identity can fall back to the master record under the documented policy. SMS is limited to capable US and Canada DIDs and, in the reviewed guide, FreePBX or PBXact through UCP or Zulu. Verify each address, identity and DID capability independently and follow current provider-approved testing and registration procedures.

Price the actual order and preserve acceptance evidence

The public marketing and store showed different current amounts during this review, so neither is treated as a durable quote. Price the exact channel, DID, outbound T.38, E911, messaging and international mix at checkout, including taxes, top-ups, commitments and support terms. Confirm number inventory, portability and activation for the transaction rather than extrapolating from trial coverage or rate-center counts.

Before porting, complete bounded inbound, outbound, caller-ID, DTMF, transfer, long-call, failover, emergency and applicable fax or SMS checks. Store redacted SIP and media evidence with the configuration export and provider case. No SIPStation account, trunk, PBX, number, call, media, fax, emergency call, message, rate, availability or support response was tested for this guide.

Follow a failed SIPStation inbound call through the actual delivery order

The SIPStation inbound diagnostic keeps registration or peer mode, primary and secondary gateway behavior, configured failover, DID delivery, FreePBX route matching and media as separate evidence.
