Freeze the expected owner and first failed read
Record one authorized occurrence with timestamp and timezone, Asterisk branch, loaded context, extension and priority, variable name without its inheritance prefix, redacted value class, write point, expected consumer, first blank or wrong read and final call symptom. Preserve channel name, type, unique ID and linked ID for every relevant leg.
Classify the first divergence as wrong channel, write after child creation, one-level inheritance exhausted, recursive inheritance overwritten, Gosub-local shadowing, returned stack frame, missing master, stale explicit channel name, missing variable or later application failure.
Prove the current channel before reading its store
At the failed priority, capture CHANNEL(name), CHANNEL(channeltype), CHANNEL(uniqueid) and CHANNEL(linkedid). Compare that identity with the channel on which the value was set. A linked ID correlates related channels but does not merge their stores.
If CHANNEL(item) is blank, confirm whether the item is available on this technology and leg. Do not convert an unavailable channel item into a missing inherited variable diagnosis.
Place the write relative to child creation
Identify the exact Set() and every later Dial(), Originate, Local-channel or transfer action that creates a child. _NAME reaches the next child and loses its prefix; __NAME remains recursive. A prefix applied after the affected child exists cannot change that child.
Search for later writes to prefixed or unprefixed forms. Asterisk treats them as the same variable for assignment, so one later write can replace the value and inheritance form expected by subsequent children.
Inspect Gosub frames without broadening channel scope
If the value is set with LOCAL(), record the active Gosub depth at write and read. After Return(), that frame is gone and a previously hidden value can reappear. LOCAL_PEEK() can inspect a specified lower frame, but an out-of-range depth returns blank.
Do not add an underscore to repair a subroutine-local contract or use LOCAL_PEEK() to search an unknown stack. Fix the subroutine argument, local owner, return timing or caller-visible result that the design actually requires.
Validate master and explicit cross-channel access
For MASTER_CHANNEL(), prove which oldest associated channel currently owns the linked ID and whether it still exists. When no separate master remains, the documented fallback is the local channel store, which can make a late read differ from an earlier one.
For IMPORT(), preserve the exact target channel name, existence and lifetime. A transfer, hangup or Local-channel optimization can remove the target. Do not widen access or guess a sibling name from a shared linked ID.
Correct the first boundary and retest creation paths
Use VARIABLE_EXISTS() to distinguish absent from present-but-blank on the intended channel, then correct only the demonstrated owner, prefix, timing, stack frame, master access or explicit channel reference. Keep values such as credentials and customer identifiers out of logs.
Retest one child, a grandchild only when recursive inheritance is intended, both Local halves, Gosub return, transfer or fork where relevant, and an unrelated control route. A variable visible at one priority is not proof of correct destination behavior or a completed call. No PBX, channel, variable, subroutine, transfer, Local-channel path or live call was tested.
Check target-context variables in evaluated dialplan data
The dialplan lookup diagnostic verifies whether a value was resolved in the EVAL_EXTEN target rather than the invoking extension.
Trace structured state after proving the channel
When the missing value is a HASH key or ARRAY target, continue with the structured-state diagnostic to check key spelling, snapshot timing and delimiter shape.
Prove that the channel still exists before reading its state
The channel lifetime diagnostic locates wrong-leg selection, rename, optimization and hangup before changing inheritance.
